Zwolle keeper Diederik Boer was the hero for the away side in the first half, as he kept out efforts from Adraz Kirm, and Richairo Zivkovic, while Filip Kostic fired into the side netting.
PEC Zwolle had the best chance to open the scoring before the break, but Giovanni Hiwat could only fire over after capitalising on a slip by Wijnaldum.
The home side continued to press after the break, but found Boer on top form, with the keeper stopping efforts from Kostic, and defender Alex Botteghin.
PEC Zwolle sat back for most of the second period, and were happy to play on the counter attack, with Ryan Thomas coming the closest for the visitors, but his shot went wide.
Substitute forward David Tiexeira had a great chance to win the game for Groningen in the third minute of injury time, but the Brazilians shot went inches wide.
The point sees Groningen remain 4th, while PEC Zwolle climb above PSV Eindhoven, and Feyenoord into 6th as their great start to the season continues.
