Heerenveen have moved up to third after a comfortable 3-0 win over nine-man Groningen in the derby of the north.

gron-heeHeerenveen went into the game on a six match unbeaten run and they took only seven minutes to take the lead against Groningen with Arber Zeneli finishing well off a pass from Pelle van Amersfoort.

The home side then went looking for an equaliser with both Danny Hoesen and Oussama Idrissi testing Erwin Mulder, but their chances of a comeback took a blow on 36 minutes when Jason Davidson was shown a straight red card for an altercation with Zeneli.

Heerenveen dominated with the man advantage but had to wait until the 73rd minute to double their lead through Sam Larsson, who scored after good work from Jerry St Juste. Groningen’s evening was summed up when Samir Memisevic received his second yellow which reduced them to nine men and with eight minutes left Reza Ghoochannejhad added a third for the visitors.

Heerenveen’s win leapfrogs them above PSV, while Groningen drop to 16th.
