The home side went into the game having not won since beating NEC 5-2 at the end of December, but they got off to the perfect start as Tjarron Chery fired into the bottom corner from outside the box after only three minutes.
Before the break Erik Falkenburg and Deniz Turuc both wasted good opportunities to equalise for the visitors, while at the other end Chery shot just wide.
Go Ahead Eagles looked the more likely to score in the second half, but Marco Bizot pulled off good stops to deny Turuc twice. Genero Zeefuik should have sealed the three points late on for Groningen but he could only shoot straight at the keeper when in space.
In the end it didn’t matter as Groningen held on for the three points, which moves them level on points with PEC Zwolle in eighth while Go Ahead remain 12th.
