A first half penalty from Michael de Leeuw was enough to give Groningen a 1-0 victory over Willem II in the Euroborg.

grwilChances were few and far between in the first half, but an unfortunate handball from Jerson Cabral handed Groningen a penalty on 31 minutes and Michael de Leeuw made no mistake to make it 1-0.

The second half was full of chances for both sides with Kostas Lamprou having to make fine stops from Danny Hoesen, Tjarron Chery, and Maikel Kieftenbeld while at the other end Groningen stopper Sergio Padt prevented both Cabral and Robert Braber from equalising.

Willem II had a great opportunity to draw level late on, but Stijn Wuytens could only fire harmlessly wide after being found with room in the box, and Groningen held on for the three points.

With four wins from seven matches Groningen sit 7th, while Willem II are tenth.
