After a heavy defeat to Feyenoord in the last round of matches, Groningen were looking to get back on track as they welcomed another side from Rotterdam in Excelsior. However the home side got off to the worst possible start as defender Maikel Kieftenbeld sent a header past Sergio Padt and into his own net.
Just before the break Groningen drew level when Excelsior keeper Gino Coutinho failed to hold Michael de Leeuw’s shot, and Eric Botteghin was on hand to net on the rebound.
The home side threw everything they could at Excelsior in the second half in order to find a winner, but the Rotterdammer’s held strong, and they could have nicked all three points on the counter attack, with Jordan Botaka shaving the outside of the post.
Its the first time this season that Groningen failed to win all three points at home, and Erwin de Looi’s side now sit 11th, while Excelsior drop to 14th.
