After Ajax’s win over Heerenveen on Saturday PSV’s lead at the top had been reduced to just one point, and they began the game against Groningen in determined fashion. An excellent cross from Jetro Willems picked out Adam Maher at the back post for the games first big chance, but goalkeeper Sergio Padt pulled off an excellent save.
This proved to be a theme of the first half as PSV continued to get into good positions, but Padt pulled off excellent saves to deny Luciano Narsingh, Maher and Luuk de Jong, as Memphis Depay also sent a free header over the bar.
Groningen had chances of their own in the first half, Danny Hoesen firing into the side netting when through on goal, while Jeroen Zoet denied Michael de Leeuw with a smart save.
After the break PSV continued to press and finally on 57 minutes they broke the deadlock as Jetro Willems found De Jong with an excellent cross, and the striker made no mistake in heading past Padt.
PSV continued to dominate the possession, but they failed to add a killer second goal, and seven minutes from the end Mimoun Mahi fired the ball to the back post for Michael de Leeuw to head the equaliser.
Depay and De Jong both had efforts cleared off the line late on as Groningen held on for the point. PSV now sit two points ahead of Ajax with a match against Feyenoord next up for Phillip Cocu’s side. Groningen remain unbeaten at home and sit 11th
Really cheers to Groningen !
Padt was on an amazing day he was just a wall and caused us so much trouble to score and Mahi left our Arias completely clueless on his goal with his sick skills.
It was a nice match to watch but now Ajax is dangerously catching up to us. We really need the 3 points against Feyenoord but it’s gonna be a war to get them.
