Groningen went into the game undefeated in front of their own fans but from the start Utrecht proved to be far too strong for Edwin van de Looi’s side. The in-form Sebastien Haller missed two glorious chances before Bart Ramselaar eventually gave the away side the lead on 16 minutes.
Norwegian forward Alexander Sørloth was handed his debut for Groningen and just before the half hour mark he leveled the scores. ohan Kappelhof’s long ball forward was well controlled in the box by the striker, who netted calmly past Robbin Ruiter.
Three minutes into the second half Timo Letschert restored Utrecht’s lead with a lovely free-kick into the bottom corner. Groningen’s defence then fell apart and Utrecht netted twice in two minutes to wrap up the win. Firstly Timo Letschert made it 3-1 on 59 minutes before Haller set up Andreas Ludwig to smash in.
Ludwig was then shown his second yellow card, but even with their opponents down to ten men, Groningen couldn’t make a comeback.
Utrecht now sit sixth, while Groningen are ninth.
