The play-offs for the final Eredivisie place in the Europa League began on Thursday with Groningen edging out Heracles Almelo 2-1 in the Euroborg.

lindgren groherThe home side took the lead after eleven minutes s Hans Hateboer netted his first goal of the season. The talented left-back headed in Oussama Idrissi cross.

Groningen continued to dominate the first half, but failed to add a second goal and on the stroke of half time, Heracles stunned the home crowd. Striker Wout Weghorst latched onto Jiroslav Navratil’s pass and slid the ball past Sergio Padt.

However, five minutes into the second half Rasmus Lindgren settled the tie with a header from Albert Rusnak’s corner. The two teams meet again this Sunday in Almelo with the winner going on to meet either Utrecht or PEC Zwolle for a place in the final.
