The home side, who won the reverse fixture 5-1 in Utrecht, made a perfect start to the game with Bryan Linssen heading them ahead after only four minutes.
Groningen continued to dominate after the opener as Oussama Idrissi, Mimoun Mahi and Linssen all went close to adding a second, while at the other end Gyrano Kerk’s header came back off the post. Eventually, on the stroke of half time, Groningen did double their lead with Linssen taking advantage of poor defending to net his second.
Ten minutes into the second half, Utrecht got themselves back into the game as Sebastien Haller found the net with a fine header. Groningen then failed to kill off the game and with ten minutes to go Giovanni Troupee found the top corner with an excellent strike to level the scores. Moments later, Utrecht stunned the home crowd as Yassin Ayoub raced onto a Kerk flick before lifting the ball into the net to complete the comeback.
The win lifts Utrecht to fourth while Groningen are 10th and falling behind in the race for the play-offs.
