The 26-year-old who came through the ranks at Sparta Rotterdam has spent the second half of the season on loan at the Euroborg where he has scored once in fourteen appearances, having been sidelined by high-flying AZ where he did not manage a domestic league or cup game.

As part of the deal that took him to Groningen the club had the option to make the loan into a permanent transfer, as long as this was activated by May 1. However, Groningen wants to wait until the end of the season before deciding on any future move.

The club’s director Hans Nijland said in their weekly newsletter, “We conclude this newsletter with the announcement that we do not lift the option in the Iliass Bel Hassani contract.

“This does not mean that we are saying goodbye to him, but we only want to make a final decision on this after the end of this season.”

Bel Hassani appears to have no future at AZ, and the Moroccan was booed by fans on his return to Alkmaar in reference to derisory remarks he made about the club to the media
