VVV-Venlo were looking to bounce back from their 13-0 loss to Ajax last weekend, and did not have to come up against Arjen Robben, who was once again missing for Groningen.
Daniël van Kaam scored for Groningen in the 15th minute, but the goal was disallowed after VAR spotted a foul by Jørgen Strand Larsen. In the 26th minute, it was 1-0 as Patrick Joosten fired the hosts ahead.
Strand Larsen then doubled the lead in the 48th minute after a cross from Alessio Da Cruz.
Georgios Giakoumakis scored a wonderful bicycle kick late on for VVV-Venlo but it was only a consolation.
Groningen are now 6th, while VVV sits 14th.
