Groningen threw the Eredivisie title race back open with a 2-1 win over Ajax in the Euroborg.

Ajax went into the game without injured star Hakim Ziyech, while Andre Onana also missed out. Siem de Jong and Bruno Varela came into the eleven.

Groninge, with several ex-Ajax players in their line-up sensed an opportunity and they put the league leaders under pressure from the start. After fifteen minutes, Groningen had the lead with Kaj Sierhuis, who is on loan from Ajax, working the ball rather fortunately into the net.

Ryan Babel missed a great chance to equalise before the break, while Varela had to prevent Sierhuis from making it 2-0.

Seven minutes into the second half, Ramon Pascal Lundqvist’s shot from the edge of the box deflected into the net off Lisandro Martinez’s foot and Groningen did have a 2-0 lead.

Erik ten Hag reacted by bringing on Lassina Traore and Carel Eiting for De Jong and Ryan Gravenberch. After the changes, Ajax poured forward and with twenty minutes to go, Donny van de Beek pulled one back with a clever finish.

However, there was to be no equaliser as Groningen held on to claim the three points, which moves them up to 8th. Ajax are now only three points above AZ Alkmaar at the top.
