Groningen eased some of the pressure on head coach Danny Buijs as they struck late on to earn a 1-1 draw against 10-man Utrecht.

Joint bottom of the league and out of the cup after defeat to Twente in midweek, Groningen went into the clash on Sunday struggling for confidence.

Utrecht dominated the opening stages and were ahead after only fifteen minutes as Sander van de Streek tapped in after being set up by Gyrano Kerk.

After the opener, Utrecht decided to sit back and soak up the pressure which led to chances for Groningen. Breij and Mike te Wierik went close, with the former hitting the bar early in the second half.

In the 64th minute, Utrecht was reduced to ten men when Simon Gustafson, who had just hit the post, was shown a red card for a challenge on Samir Memisevic. VAR looked at it but it wasn’t overturned, much to the fury of Dick Advocaat, who was yellow carded.

Groningen pushed for an equaliser which came in the 76th minute when Tim Freriks header was parried into the path of Ahmad Mendes Moreira, who struck in the rebound.

Utrecht came closest to finding the winner but Nicolas Gavory hit the woodwork.

The point means Groningen move one point above NAC at the bottom while Utrecht are one spot above in 16th.
