RKC went into the game with only one point from their opening eight games and their situation did not get any better on Friday evening.
The visitors began the game well and only Sergio Padt making some excellent saves denied RKC from taking the lead. However, in the 21st minute, Mike Te Wierik headed in a free-kick from close range to give Groningen the lead.
Before the break, Charlison Benschop tapped in a Deyovaisio Zeefuik cross to add the hosts second.
Groningen had no problems with RKC after the break and in the 78th minute they completed the victory thanks to a fierce strike from Gabriel Gudmundsson.
Groningen move up to 12th after the win while RKC are six points off safety.
