Paul Gladon’s late goal gave Groningen a 1-0 victory over De Graafschap in the Euroborg.

Groningen’s form since the winter break has seen them move away from the relegation zone and into the running for a European playoff spot. A win against second-bottom De Graafschap was needed to keep them hot on the heels of the top eight.

However, in the first half it was the visitors who had the better chances through Charlison Benschop and Javier Vet. Luckily for Groningen, who had an offside Kaj Sierhuis goal ruled out, it remained 0-0 going into the break.

De Graafschap continued to cause problems after the break but they failed to punish the sloppy hosts and with 15 minutes to go, Groningen took the lead. Substitute Paul Gladon backheeled Mike te Wierik’s shot into the net.

The victory moves Groningen into ninth and two points off eighth, which should be a playoff spot. De Graafschap are 17th.
