Heavy snowfall in Kerkrade had made the playing conditions difficult but the game went ahead as planned. Roda JC completely dominated from the start and after 14 minutes, Sergio Padt parried Dani Schahin’s shot into the path of Simon Gustafson, who tapped into the net to give the hosts a deserved lead.
Referee Pol van Boekel then delayed the game in order for the pitch to be cleared of snow, and when play resumed, Gustafson robbed Samir Memisevic of the ball before sending a lob over Padt and into the net.
Groningen were barely in the game, but three minutes after falling two behind they pulled one back as Tom van Weert slid in Jesper Drost’s cross at the back post.
Roda JC continued to dominate early in the second half, but in the 59th minute, Adil Auassar brought down Van Weert, earning himself a red card and Groningen a penalty. Van Weert calmly slotted the spot kick into the net to level the score.
With the man advantage, Groningen pushed for a winner but Van Weert and Oussama Idrissi sent efforts over the bar as Roda JC claimed a point.
Groningen climb to 12th while Roda JC remain second-bottom.
