Sparta went into the game on the back of sacking Alex Pastoor last weekend after the 7-0 hammering by Feyenoord. Dick Advocaat’s name has been put forward to take over at Het Kasteel but on Sunday, Dolf Roks took charge.
The temporary coach saw his side go into the break level thanks to the woodwork which came to Sparta’s rescue to deny Oussama Idrissi and Mimoun Mahi. Lars Veldwijk also missed a big chance for the hosts.
Four minutes into the second half, Groningen finally took the lead with Veldwijk played in on goal by Idrissi before slotting the ball past Roy Kortsmit.
Tom van Weert doubled the lead from a Mahi cross on 75 minutes before Fredrik Holst diverted a Juninho Bacuna cross into his own net to make it 3-0. In the final minute, Ritsu Doan completed the rout.
Groningen head into the winter break sitting 13th while Sparta are bottom.
