Utrecht’s wait for a home win in 2019 goes on after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Groningen on Friday evening.

Utrecht went into the game on a good run of form, having taken seven points from their last three matches. Groningen are also on the rise and they wanted a win in the Cathedral City to boost their European playoff chances.

Groningen goalkeeper Sergio Padt was forced into an excellent save to deny Sander van de Streek just minutes into the game. Utrecht controlled most of the first-half but could not find a way past Padt, while at the other end Kaj Sierhuis caused the hosts problems without troubling David Jensen.

After the break, neither side could break the deadlock. Substitute Othman Boussaid fired inches wide for Utrecht while Deyovaisio Zeefuik wasted Groningen’s best chance with a wild effort.

With ten minutes to go, Dick Advocaat turned to Nick Venema, but the youngster didn’t have enough time to have an impact as Groningen held on.

The point means Utrecht stay 6th while Groningen are eighth.
