Groningen eased the pressure on boss Danny Buijs with a 4-2 victory at Excelsior.

Going into the game rock bottom of the Eredivisie, Groningen were desperate for a good result and their second win of the campaign, while Excelsior were hoping to climb into the top half of the table.

After a quiet opening period which saw Excelsior denied a penalty via VAR, Groningen took the lead in the 26th minute when Mimoun Mahi stroked the ball past Sonny Stevens from the edge of the area. Three minutes later, it was 2-0 through Ritsu Doan, who took the ball down in the box before firing a low strike into the net.

Nine minutes before the break, Ryan Koolwijk pulled one back for the hosts with an excellent volley from a corner. Excelsior then went in search for an equaliser, but in the 51st minute, Mateo Cassierra restored Groningen’s two-goal lead.

Excelsior again threatened a comeback when Luigi Bruins made it 2-3 from the penalty spot but substitute Jannik Pohl sealed the victory for Groningen with his first Eredivisie goal.

The victory lifts Groningen off the bottom and above NAC Breda, while Excelsior stay tenth.
