Sparta Rotterdam missed a penalty and had goalkeeper Tim Coremans sent off for a headbutt as they lost 2-0 at Groningen.

Sparta went into the game looking to move back into the top six and they got the first big chance of the match. Halil Dervisoglu could only head straight at Sergio Padt, though.

The rest of the first half saw both sides create small chances with Dervisoglu having an effort cleared off the line just before half-time.

In the 53rd minute, Deyovaisio Zeefuik pushed Adil Auassar down in the box and Sparta were awarded a penalty. However, Bryan Smeet’s spot-kick was poor and was easily saved by Sergio Padt.

Ahmed El Messaoudi then smashed the post for Groningen before the deadlock was finally broken in the 85th minute. Kaj Sierhuis shot low past Coremans to make it 1-0.

Sierhuis then got involved in a tussle with Coremans in the final minutes, which led to the goalkeeper headbutting the striker. Coremans saw red and Charlison Benschop scored the resulting penalty to seal the victory.

Groningen are now 11th with Sparta two places above them.
