Groningen have closed the gap on the top five after a 1-0 victory over 10-man PEC Zwolle.

PEC Zwolle headed to the Euroborg on a four-game unbeaten run, while Groningen was looking to close the gap on the top five. The hosts left new signing Paulos Abraham on the bench.

Groningen started brightly and took the lead in the 16th minute with Jorgen Strand Larsen prodding the ball into the net from close range.

Before the break, Groningen had chances to double their lead but Mo El Hankouri and Thomas Suslov both couldn’t find the break.

In the second half, Groningen remained on top but PEC Zwolle goalkepeer Xavier Mous denied Strand Larsen and Gabriel Gudmundsson.

PEC Zwolle were reduced to ten men when Pelle Clement saw red, but the visitors came close to an equaliser through Dean Huiberts and Virgil Misidjan. Groningen survived and Abraham was able to make his debut before the end.

The victory means Groningen are sixth and now only one point behind Feyenoord, while PEC Zwolle are 13th.
