Advocaat quit his position with the national team last week to take over as head coach at Fenerbahce, and the KNVB have now targeted Ruud Gullit as his replacement. VI is reporting that the former midfielder is to fly to the Netherlands on Sunday to iron out the last few details on his contract.
Gullit himself told the associated press, “I was called last week by coach Danny Blind if I had interest in a role as assistant coach after the departure of Advocaat.”
“We talked together and Blind gave me the feeling that I can add value to the staff at Orange and for the team.”
Gullit hasn’t had a coaching role since being sacked by Russian side Terek Grozny after a short spell as manager of the club. However, he is now expected to take his place on the bench alongside Marco van Basten and Danny Blind when Netherlands face Greece in a friendly on the 1st of September.
As much as love this guy, his coaching experience has not been impressive compared to the crop of dutch coaches in the world right now. But you can never tell what will work and everything is worth trying right now… so here’s to some a good world cup qualifying campaign and some luck since we’ll definitely need it!
