Dick Advocaat has his first league win as Utrecht boss after they defeated NAC Breda 2-1 thanks to a Simon Gustafson double.

Utrecht went into the game sitting in 16th after a disappointing start to the campaign but they dominated NAC from the start on Friday evening.

Chances came and went for the hosts but in first-half injury time, Simon Gustafson went down after a soft challenge by Menno Koch. Bjorn Kuipers consulted VAR and pointed to the spot. Gustafson slotted in the spot kick to make it 1-0.

Two minutes after the break, Utrecht doubled their lead with Gustafson sending an excellent strike into the top corner from just outside the box. Utrecht were denied a third by Benjamin van Leer, who made two great saves from Willem Janssen and then Timo Letschert. Sander van de Streek also struck the bar.

In the 65th minute, NAC Breda pulled one back through Mikhail Rosheuvel. There was a hint of offside but after checking with VAR, the goal stood.

NAC grew in confidence thanks to the goal and Gianluca Nijholt came close to an equaliser but his header flew just wide. A minute before the end, Sydney van Hooijdonk came on for his Eredivisie debut but he could not help find a leveler.

Utrecht climb up to ninth thanks to the win while NAC are rock bottom.
