john cJohn was close to joining Ajax last week, but the Eredivisie side pulled out of the deal after Frank de Boer stated he was happy with the squad at his disposal.

Now the 21-year-old will move to the Bundesliga to join Hamburg until the end of the season, pending a medical, which should be a formality.

The one time Dutch international has not made a single league appearance for Benfica this season, and needs to leave the club in order to come into consideration for next summers World Cup.

In the Bundesliga, John will have the chance to impress Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal, and joins fellow Dutch international Rafael van der Vaart, and Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk at Hamburg.

The Bundesliga side currently sit 14th in the table and are in danger of getting dragged into the relegation zone, with only a two point gap to 16th placed Freiburg.
