The homes side had the best chances of a low key first half with Nick Marsman saving two long range efforts from Hakim Ziyech, while Kenny Otigba saw his header cleared off the line by Shadrach Eghan. At the other end Twente were convinced they should of had a penalty when Dusan Tadic was brought down in the box, but the referee waved play on.
Twente dominated the second half and Kristoffer Nordfeldt had to tip over a curling Dusan Tadic free kick which was heading for the top corner.
On 73 minutes the deadlock was finally broken when Tadic’s shot from the right hand side of the box was deflected and looped over the head of Nordfeldt.
Minutes later it should have been 2-0, but Quincy Promes somehow fired over from a few yards out following Youness Mokhtar’s cross. In the 90th minute it was 2-0 as Tadic found substitute Torgein Borven at the back post, and the striker slid the ball into the net.
The win moves Twente into 2nd place and a point behind Ajax, while Heerenveen remain 5th.
