A sublime goal by Sam Larsson was enough for Heerenveen to earn a 1-0 win over Willem II.

Losing five of their last six matches has seen Heerenveen slide down the table and put their chances of reaching the European play-offs at risk.

The Frisians needed a win against Willem II on Friday and they deservedly took the lead five minutes before the break when Sam Larsson broke through on the left wing before calmly slotting past Kostas Lamprou.

Willem II barely threatened in the first half but after the break, they applied some pressure with Fran Sol and Obbi Oulare both shooting just wide of Erwin Mulder’s goal. At the other end, Arber Zeneli and Larsson both had chances to net Heerenveen’s second but in the end it didn’t matter as the hosts held out.

The win keeps Heerenveen in pole position for 8th which will be the final play-off spot. The gap to ninth is now six points. Willem II remain 11th.
