NEC made the brighter start to the match, but it was Heerenveen who eventually took the lead after 40 minutes when Bilal Basacikoglu danced through four defenders before firing into the bottom corner.
It was 2-0 before the break for Heerenveen after Rens van Eijden conceded a penalty, and Alfred Finnbogason calmly netted from the spot. it was Finnbogason’s 48th goal for the club, and he becomes Heerenveen’s all time leading scorer in the Eredivisie.
With twelve minutes to go NEC pulled a goal back when Michael Higdon fired past Kristoffer Nordfeldt, for the Englishman’s 13th goal of the season.
Heerenveen defender Kenny Otigba then hit the bar with a header from a free kick before NEC were reduced to ten men as Van Eijden saw red for his second yellow card.
However in the 91st minute Heerenveen couldn’t clear a free kick and Soren Rieks was on hand to half volley into the bottom corner to earn NEC a crucial point.
NEC remain 2nd bottom, but they are now only four points from safety, while Heerenveen remain 6th.
