Heerenveen opened the scoring on 12 minutes through midfielder Hakim Ziyech, who stole the ball in the middle before advancing on goal and sending a shot past Filip Kurto.
The away side equalised on the half hour mark as Guus Hupperts cross was converted into the net by striker Krisztian Nemeth.
Ziyech nearly netted his second goal of the game just after the hour mark but his long range effort was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Kurto.
On 66 minutes Heerenveen were awarded a penalty when Alfred Finnbogason was blocked off the ball, and the striker slotted the spot kick into the corner to make it 2-1.
The lead did not last for Heerenveen again as Guus Hupperts equalised for Roda on 71 minutes with a great outside of the boot finish into the bottom corner. Hupperts then nearly netted the winner for Roda, but his low shot from the edge of the box flew just wide of the post.
Jon Dahl Tomasson’s reign as Roda JC boss begins with a respectable point as they bid to move away from the relegation places, while Heerenveen remain 5th.
