The home side went into the game as heavy favourites despite their recent form, but they struggled in the first half and it was only when Mohamed El Makrini saw red for a challenge on Martin Odegaard on 54 minutes that they took control.
Five minutes after the red, Odegaard found Doke Schmidt with a free-kick and the defender diverted the ball into the net with his shoulder. Heerenveen had to wait until the 89th minute to add a second through Henk Veerman, who got the decisive touch on an Arber Zeneli cross.
In injury time, Sam Larsson was brought down in the box and Reza Ghoochannejhad added a third from the spot. The win sees Heerenveen rise up to sixth while Roda JC are 15th.
