Jurgen Streppel’s side have made a good start to the season and went into the game unbeaten at the Abe Lenstra stadium. Heracles provided an early scare as Brandley Kuwas raced through on goal but he shot wide when faced with Erwin Mulder.
Heerenveen then took control and after twenty minutes they took the lead with Sam Larsson laying the ball back to the edge of the area for Stefan Marzo to fire a strike into the bottom corner. It could have been 2-0 soon after but Pelle van Amersfoort headed a good chance wide.
Just before half time Heracles equalised through Kuwas who made up for his miss earlier in the game with a shot that should have been saved by Mulder but ended in the net.
Midway through the second half Larsson fired Heerenveen back in front with a shot from outside the box and Jerry St Juste then sealed the victory with a fine strike on 78 minutes.
The win puts Heerenveen above PSV in third thanks to a superior goal difference, while Heracles drop to fifteenth.
