Heerenveen netted two late goals to defeat Volendam 3-1 in a match delayed by some stormy weather.

Volendam came closest first with Benaissa Benamar hitting the crossbar with a strike from distance before Robert Muhren had the ball in the net for the hosts. However, VAR intervened and it was disallowed for a slight offside.

Two minutes after Muhren’s goal was disallowed, Heerenveen took the lead as Sydney van Hooijdonk nodded in. Volendam thought it should have been disallowed for a push in the build up but VAR saw nothing wrong.

Muhren equalised for Volendam in the 43rd minute after being set up by Carel Eiting and much to the attacker’s relief, the goal was given after another VAR check.

Heerenveen went looking for the win in the second half but halfway through the game was paused as a storm hit the fishing village. Lightning caused a lengthy delay but the game did eventually get back underway.

With five minutes left, Mats Köhlert cut inside before firing Heerenveen in front and the German then set up Amin Sarr to add a third shortly afterward.

Heerenveen is up to 7th with the win while Volendam remains bottom of the table.
