Gertjan Verbeek was hoping to earn his first victory since becoming FC Twente boss but his side were second best from the start and fell behind on 24 minutes when Daniel Høegh brilliantly flicked Nemanja Mihajlovic’s cross past Jorn Brondeel.
It was 2-0 just before the break as Michael Vlap fired Denzel Dumfries deflected cross past Brondeel from just inside the box.
In the second half, the hosts continued to struggle and eventually it was 3-0 through Ødegaard, who clipped the ball into an empty net after Brondeel raced out to clear, before knocking the ball into the Norwegian’s path. It was the on-loan midfielder’s first Eredivisie goal since moving from Real Madrid in January.
With three minutes left, Henk Veerman made it 4-0 with the striker bustling into the box before firing a low strike into the net.
The victory moves Heerenveen to seventh, while Twente remain second bottom.
