Mike van Duinen netted the only goal of the game as Excelsior Rotterdam came away from Heerenveen with a 1-0 victory.

Heerenveen, fresh from their draw with PSV last weekend, started brightly and should have been ahead in the 8th minute when Reza Ghoochannejhad found himself in on goal, but the striker hit the post.

The hosts continued to dominate but Theo Zwarthoed denied Michel Vlap while Arber Zeneli fired a strike over the bar.

On 38 minutes, Excelsior stunned the Frisians by taking the lead through Van Duinen who finished calmly after being set up by Ali Messaoud.

In the second half, Heerenveen poured forward looking for the equaliser but Zwarthoed stood strong to deny Zeneli and two efforts from Martin Ødegaard.

Excelsior clung on for the win which moves them up to 10th while Heerenveen are one spot above them.
