Heerenveen kicked off the Eredivisie campaign with a 1-0 victory over newly-promoted Go Ahead Eagles in Deventer.

Heerenveen have managed to keep hold of star man Joey Veerman so far this summer and the midfielder was a cut above the rest from the start in Deventer. After only seven minutes, Veerman had an assist as he passed for Tibor Halilovic to send a looping strike into the net.

The hosts, who were playing their first game back in the Eredivisie since their promotion, could not handle Veerman as he controlled the game. Before the break, Heerenveen should have been further ahead but Arjen van de Heide and Henk Veerman could not find the net.

Martijn Berden had the best chance for Go Ahead Eagles in the first half but his effort was kept out by Erwin Mulder.

The home crowd got behind Go Ahead in the second half and they pinned Heerenveen back at times. However, the closest they came to netting was a Marc Cardona strike that crashed against the crossbar.

Heerenveen held on to take the victory and they get the season off to a good start. Go Ahead Eagles must pick themselves up.
