Jorrit Hendrix denied Roda JC a crucial win at the bottom of the table as champions PSV Eindhoven escaped Kerkrade with a 2-2 draw.

After sealing the championship at the weekend, Phillip Cocu decided to make several changes to his side that eased to victory over Ajax. Sam Lammers, Derrick Luckassen, Mauro Junior, Pablo Rosario and Bart Ramselaar all came into the eleven along with goalkeeper Eloy Room.

Roda JC knew a win would put them within one point of safety but they were second best in the early stages with Ramselaar, Lammer and Hirving Lozano all squandering good chances to give PSV the lead.

Just before the half-hour mark, Roda JC did take the lead against the run of play with Jannes Vansteenkiste firing a low strike past Room. However, the lead only lasted four minutes before Lozano skipped through two challenges and arrowed a strike into the bottom corner.

Early in the second-half, Roda attacker Mikhail Rosheuvel hammered a strike against the bar while at the other end, PSV’s new look front line struggled for fluidity and created very little. Rosario and Lozano both had strong shouts for a penalty turned down, but Hidde Jurjus remained untroubled in the Roda goal.

In the 65th minute, Roda JC regained their lead through Simon Gustafson, who picked up the ball outside the box before firing a lovely strike past Room.

PSV didn’t look likely to find an equaliser but five minutes from time, captain for the day Jorrit Hendrix found the top corner with an excellent shot from 30 metres. PSV could have won the game before the end but Jurjus produced an excellent save to keep out Joshua Brenet’s header.

The point means that Roda JC are now three points from safety with two games left.
