After the sacking of Michel Vonk on Tuesday, Sparta Rotterdam have appointed Henk ten Cate as their new manager.

ten cateThe club is currently on a three game losing streak, which saw them drop to third in the Eerste Divisie table, and led them to dismiss Michel Vonk, who has been in charge since 2011.

Ten Cate previously managed Sparta Rotterdam betwwen 1995-97, guiding the club to a 6th place finish in the Eredivisie, and the final of the KNVB Cup, which they lost to PSV Eindhoven.

Since then the 58 year old has been assistant manager to Frank Rijkaard at Barcelona, winning the Champions league, while he was also an assistant to Avram Grant at Chelsea, when they lost to Manchester United in the Champions league final.

He has also managed Ajax, guiding them to the KNVB Cup, but could not win the Eredivisie after they finished level on points at the top with PSV Eindhoven, they were beaten by a single goal difference.

More recently, Ten Cate has had spells in Greece, Dubai, and China with limited success in all.

It is believed he will be paid no salary by Sparta Rotterdam, as he takes charge until the end of the season out of love for the club, with the aim of promotion to the Eredivisie.
