AZ Alkmaar got back to winning ways on Friday night as Wout Weghort and Alireza Jahanbakhsh fired them to victory in Almelo.

The visitors began brightly in Almelo looking for their first win in four games, but they could not find a way past Bram Castro despite a flurry of chances in the opening 20 minutes. Dabney Dos Santos missed when through one-on-one with the Heracles goalkeeper, who then stopped efforts from Wout Weghorst and Alireza Jahanbakhsh.

Heracles struggled to get going in the first half but Justin Hoogma nearly gave them the lead with a header which dropped wide.

Seven minutes into the second half, AZ found the opening goal through Weghorst, who blasted the ball past Castro after it deflected into his path off Jahanbakhsh. With eight minutes to go, Weghorst turned provider to set Jahanbakhsh through on the right and after skipping past one challenge the winger arrowed a strike into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

With the final kick of the game Brandley Kuwas rifled a stunning free-kick past Tim Krul but it proved nothing but a consolation for the hosts.

The win keeps AZ in sixth and they close in on fifth placed Vitesse, while Heracles are ninth.
