The home side took the lead after 25 minutes thanks to a brilliant free kick by Ousamma Tannane, which was curled past Kristoffer Nordfeldt from 30 yards.
Ten minutes before the break Heerenveen equalised when a looped free kick was headed into the net from close range by Marten de Roon.
Three minutes into the second half, Heerenveen launched a quick counter attack, and after Remko Pasveer had made a good stop to deny Rajiv van La Parra, the ball was converted from a few yards out by Alfred Finnbogason to make it 2-1.
Pasveer had to make an excellent save to deny Heerenveen defender Stefano Marzo’s excellent strike making it 3-1 a minute from time.
In the final minute of injury time, Mark Uth, who was playing against his parent club, missed a glorious chance to equalise for Heracles, as he blasted wide from a few yards out.
Heerenveen remain in 6th place with the win, while Heracles sit 11th, but only four points away from the bottom three.
