Vitesse started brightly and took the lead after only five minutes as left back Patrick van Aanholt found the bottom corner with an excellent drive from the edge of the box.
Five minutes before the break Lucas Piazon made it 2-0 to the Arnhem side with a pin point finish into the bottom corner, and Heracles would have feared the worst.
However the home side came out in the second half fighting and pulled a goal back on 50 minutes through Bryan Linssen, who finished calmly at the back post.
On 77 minutes a short corner routine ended with the ball being cut back to Linssen in the box, and the Heracles star fired past Piet Velthuizen to make it 2-2.
Heracles thought they should have had a penalty in the final minute after what appeared to be a handball in the box, but it was not given.
The point was not enough to see Vitesse stay at the top of the table as Ajax’s superior goal difference sees them climb to the summit after their win on Sunday. Heracles go into the winter break sitting 12th.
