The position of captain had become vacant after the departure of goalkeeper Remko Pasveer, who joined PSV Eindhoven last month.
This is what the club coach Jan de Jonge had to say about the appointment to Voetbal international,
“To me it’s more than a ceremony I think it’s important that you can talk about things to do and not do in the group. Mark-Jan is a player that leads the way in the fight and he has played previously with Heracles, so he knows the club. It makes sense for him to have the captaincy.
The 31 year old rejoined the club having spent three years away at Roda JC who were relegated to the Eerste Divisie last season.
