The 1-1 draw in Almelo last Thursday made Utrecht favourites going into Sunday’s tie but Erik ten Hag’s side were dealt a blow before kick off with Bart Ramselaar ruled out through injury.
Without their midfield star, Utrecht were second best from the start and their goalkeeper Filip Bednarek had to be at his best to prevent Thomas Bruns and Wout Weghorst in the first half. Eventually, after 68 minutes Heracles had the lead they deserved when a corner dropped at Bruns feet and his strike deflected off Willem Janssen before flying past Bednarek.
Utrecht threw on Ruud Boymans as they searched for the equaliser they needed, but with five minutes left Paul Gladon doubled Heracles lead and sealed their place in the Europa League.
Heracles will begin their first Europa League campaign in the qualifying rounds.
