Arouca’s last minute equaliser in Almelo last week gave Heracles an uphill task in Portugal and they barely threatened during a first half which the home side had the better chances. Walter González came the closest to scoring with a strike that just cleared Bram Castro’s goal.
In the second half Heracles began to create chances, but Arouca goalkeeper Rafael Bracali saved well from Brandley Kuwas and Paul Gladon was off target with a header. John Stegeman’s side pushed for a late winner, but Arouca comfortably held out for the draw which saw them progress.
Heracle’s first adventure in the Europa League is over and they will need to pick themselves up for the start of the season this weekend.
