Sparta Rotterdam were close to earning their first victory of the season but after captain Adil Auassar was sent off they were held to a 1-1 draw.

Sparta Rotterdam have earned good draws against AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord in recent weeks, but they are still awaiting their first victory of the campaign.

Heracles had the best of the early action but Sinan Bakis couldn’t find the net from close range with a header. Lennart Thy was then denied at the other end by Michael Brouwer.

Two minutes into the second half, Sparta took the lead when Abdou Harroui found the net with an excellent strike.

However, shortly after the lead, Sparta captain Adil Auassar lost his head and was sent off for a stamp on Rai Vloet. From that point, Heracles poured forward looking for the equaliser.

Chances were missed until the 75th minute when Vloet took advantage of space in the box to fire in the leveller.

Heracles could not find the winning goal and it was actually Sparta that came closest, but Harroui couldn’t beat Brouwer again.

The point means Sparta continue to wait for a victory and they sit second bottom, while Heracles are 12th.
