Vitesse Arnhem failed to go top of the Eredivisie on Saturday evening after being held to a 1-1 draw at Heracles Almelo.

Vitesse went into the game with two wins from their opening three games, while Heracles were searching for their first victory of the campaign.

Neither side came close in a dull opening half but six minutes after the break, Heracles should have taken the lead. Navajo Bakboord’s cross found Mauro Junior in front of goal but the midfielder somehow failed to tap the ball into an empty net.

That miss proved to be expensive with Vitesse taking the lead in the 66th minute through Bryan Linssen. The winger fired a Max Clark cross past Janis Blaswich.

Fifteen minutes later, Heracles were level when Doekhi failed to deal with a long ball forward and that allowed Cyriel Dessers to race in on goal and fire past Remko Pasveer.

Heracles should have won the game when Silvester van der Water got the ball in front of goal but he couldn’t finish past Pasveer on two different occasions.

Vitesse move onto eight points with the draw and they sit second, while Heracles sit 14th.
