Guus Hiddink has confirmed he has taken on the role of head coach with the Chinese Olympic football team.

China is determined to have their football team reaches the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and they have convinced the 71-year-old to postpone his retirement in order to guide them to the games.

Hiddink told Veronica, “China wants to qualify for the Olympic Games. The goal is participation in Tokyo 2020. The last time the Olympic team qualified was in 2008, so the wish is high.

“I’m going to work there as a manager according to the English model. I was almost retired, but this is a great job. The first qualification is in March 2019. If that is achieved, go to the qualification of 2020. I will stop if we do not get through the qualification in 2019.”

Hiddink had been out of work since leaving his interim role with Chelsea at the end of the 2015/16 season.
