Hrustic still had one year left on his deal at Groningen but now departs the club for Germany.
The 24-year-old joined Groningen from Schalke six-years ago and went on to make 75 appearances for the first-team.
Groningen Technical director Mark-Jan Fledderus told the club website: “Ajdin is one of the players in the current FC Groningen selection who has been associated with the club the longest. At FC Groningen he has undergone personal development in every way. Ajdin has shown himself to be an excellent Eredivisie football player and he now has the opportunity to prove himself in a great football country. We are proud to once again be able to deliver a player directly to a major European league such as the Bundesliga. We wish Ajdin wholeheartedly to take this step, thank him for his efforts at FC Groningen and wish him every success in the further course of his career.”
With Hrustic’s sale, Groningen now hope to bring in Sparta Rotterdam midfielder Abdou Harroui.
