Groningen began their season in fine fashion with a 1-0 victory away at FC Emmen.

Emmen began the season with eight new faces in their squad but they had the better chances in the opening phase. Sergio Padt did well to deny Michael de Leeuw the opener, while the goalkeeper was sharp to cut out a dangerous cross from Glenn Bijl.

Groningen struggled to create chances for Kaj Sierhuis, while they lost Gabriel Gudmundsson to a shoulder injury at the break, with Charlison Benschop coming on.

The game remained balanced after the break but Groningen got the better chances. Ritsu Doan had a shot saved by Dennis Telgenkamp, who also claimed a weak header from the Japanese international.

A 0-0 draw was on the cards but in the 87th minute a lovely ball over the top by Ramon Lundqvist was met by Ajdin Hrustic, who rounded Telgenkamp before slotting in the winning goal.

Groningen begin their campaign with the three points while Emmen head to Ajax next weekend.
