Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored a double as Ajax defeated Groningen 3-0 in the Johan Cruyff ArenA.

Despite the clash with AEK Athens coming up on Tuesday, Erik ten Hag named his strongest line-up for the clash with Groningen. The visitors opted for five defenders and looked to frustrate Ajax.

In the tenth minute, Ajax thought they had the lead when Nicolas Tagliafico slid the ball into the net from Hakim Ziyech’s free-kick. However, VAR noticed that the Argentine was offside. Eight minutes later, Tagliafico was pushed down in the box by Deyovaisio Zeevuik and Huntelaar scored from the spot to give Ajax the lead they deserved.

After the opener, Groningen went close through Ritsu Doan and Tim Handwerker, while at the other end, Frenkie de Jong fired wide as Ajax looked to add a second before the break.

In the second half, Hakim Ziyech fired an excellent chance wide before Huntelaar eventually made it 2-0 in the 66th minute with a fine finish from close range. Fifteen minutes from time, Dusan Tadic sealed the victory for Ajax, slotting in after good work from Ziyech.

The victory means Ajax stay two points behind leaders PSV and they will now switch focus to their Champions League clash with AEK Athens. Groningen are 16th.
