The 33-year-old missed the start of the season in Germany through injury and has been a reserve since he returned. With his contract expiring in the summer, Huntelaar and Schalke have decided against renewing the deal.

Speaking to De Telegraaf, Huntelaar said, “As it is with Schalke, it is not satisfactory. I have an expiring contract, so this is my last year at Schalke.”

Ajax have been linked heavily with bringing Huntelaar back to Amsterdam, and the striker has hinted that he would like to continue living in Netherlands, while ruling out a number of destinations.

He added, “Chances are good that I keep living in the Netherlands. The Desert, China or Turkey you can now already put a line through.”
