Klaas Jan Huntelaar is looking forward to the challenge that awaits him at Schalke 04 but it was not an easy decision for the striker to leave Ajax.

The 37-year-old is set to retire this summer but on Tuesday he completed a move from Ajax to Schalke. The veteran is hoping to help his former club stay up in the Bundesliga.

Speaking to Ajax TV, Huntelaar said farewell to the Amsterdam club, “Since I was a young boy, I was crazy about Ajax. When Kluivert scored the goal (European Cup final), I was dancing on the couch. If you come to play football there yourself, it makes it extra special. That’s why I came back. Ajax stands for the most beautiful football for me. You enjoy it the most, especially as a forward. I have always tried to do everything and to give everything.”

Leaving for Schalke was not an easy decision, “I have been here for six and a half years, got to know a lot of people. It is a strange feeling. I also slept badly after FC Twente. But I see it as a very big challenge to try to keep up with Schalke. I like challenges, that gives me energy.”

Huntelaar believes Ajax will be fine without him though, “It will be very tough, it is a completely different situation than at Ajax. I get a little more playing time there and then you can also show a little more in the last months. And with Ajax. it will be fine.”
